GAVIN PRETOR-PINNEY - CLOUDS gavin_pretor-pinney

Calling all cloud lovers…
Gavin Pretor-Pinney is a quiet revolutionary. Few of us can boast that we have managed to single-handedly rehabilitate a natural phenomenon, but his Cloud Appreciation Society now has 29,000 members in 85 countries and the Sunday Times has called cloud spotting ‘the new religion’.

In 2009 he proposed a new classification of cloud, asperatus, for a cloud that looks like a rough, choppy sea (from the Latin for ‘roughened’). It is now in common usage across the world.
From the Society's manifesto:
We pledge to fight ‘blue-sky thinking’ wherever we find it.
Life would be dull if we had to look up at cloudless monotony day after day.
